U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson Commemorates 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing
September 15, 2023
“I have come to Alabama with a heart filled with gratitude, for unlike those four little girls, I have lived, and have been entrusted with the solemn responsibility of serving our great nation,” said U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson during remarks commemorating the 60th anniversary of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, that took the lives of 4 young girls in 1963. The justice spoke about the importance of history and civil rights, and questioned why it has taken “232 years and 150 prior appointments for a black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.” Also delivering remarks was Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL), former Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL, 2017-21), and Assistant U.S. Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke.
